Asbestos Containing Products

Man Changing Brake Pads

Asbestos was used in thousands of products throughout the twentieth century. These asbestos products were used in almost every major industry, as well as the U.S. Navy and other armed forces. Asbestos was used for ship building, maintenance and repair; in manufacturing plants; for commercial and residential construction; and many other uses. Some of the major jobsites where asbestos products were found included shipyards, power plants, oil refineries, steel mills, foundries, factories, and many more.

Asbestos Used in Thousands of Products

Asbestos was extensively used as thermal insulation and fireproofing. However, it was also used for sound insulation, construction material, electrical insulation, sealing, paints, coatings and friction products. Most of these items combined asbestos fibers with other material such as magnesia, plastics, Portland cement, rubber or asphalt to form a finished product. The asbestos content in these materials ranged from less than 1% to as high as 100% asbestos.

Certain applications or equipment needed asbestos to work properly. Steam powered systems in factories and ships contained large pieces of equipment such as boilers, turbines, generators, distillers as well as an extensive network of pipes and auxiliary equipment. Most former workers were aware of the use of asbestos on this machinery and equipment. However, there are other products and applications which used or contained asbestos that are not as well known, including many household items.

Potential Exposure Exists Today

While asbestos was phased out of most products in the United States by 1989, many of the asbestos materials manufactured in the past are still in use today. Potential exposure exists during all phases of the production, transportation, storage, installation, removal and disposal of asbestos products.
